Because the cat was all that kept me going.

Because the cat was all that kept me going.

Katt: This post is going to be totally half-assed because I am tired from school, work, and have other stuff to blog, aaaand honestly this episode bugged me. It was so hectic… too many overly exaggerated moments that seemed like parodies, the random humour was ridiculous and not funny. It just wasn’t to my liking. Maybe I’m in a bad mood? Nonetheless, a new character is introduced and a kitty-cat has a problem, so I will suck it up and write on those two points quickly!

First Impressions: Nagi Ichinose

You know what absolutely sucks about Nagi’s introduction? Thanks to the opening and ending animations that over-emphasize all of the girls’ feminine features (and by that, I mean boobs and asses), her gender wasn’t a surprise at all. And that would have been the best surprise of the episode, as it was evidently meant to be based on all of the ‘he’ this and ‘him’ that going on in dialogue. I was just left waiting for the big reveal…which was an accidental groping by Junpei. Oh my.

And then what else? Ah, the girl-who-looks-like-a-guy actually ends up having a feeble, moe side. Brought out by thunderstorms. Haruhi Fujioka, is that you?! But less awesome? I am being so harsh on Nagi and I kind of feel bad, but based on promo photos I was expecting her to be cool, and she just…isn’t. Not yet, anyway, but I can lie to myself and say there’s still time as though her character might change. The only change that really occurs in her in this introductory episode is that she goes from being anti-Junpei to a lifetime member of his harem. Yeesh, at least Kana is struggling with her crush on Junpei; it’s the worst to see a character fall ridiculously hard for Junpei in the span of one episode!

How Kitties Bring People Closer Together

Nagi’s cat, Josephine, is also gender-confused. In retrospect, that is probably the funniest aspect of this entire episode to me, and of course it has to do with the kitty-cat in the spotlight. I can always find appreciation for the kitties. But this kitty is, unfortunately (or fortunately, to some?), partially to blame for this Junpei-Nagi nonsense that we have to endure in this episode. No, he wasn’t the one to get Nagi to challenge Junpei or to invite him into her room, but he has put the crazy idea of Nagi finding love out there in the open. And with only one male character around, exempting Junpei’s awesome friends, clearly Nagi’s attention is drawn to said lonely male.

Whether or not Josephine’s theory of Nagi falling for a guy leading to her acting more feminine is true has yet to be seen, although she is at least wearing the regular girls’ uniform instead of her gym uniform all the time (except she’s still wearing pants under her skirt–takes me back to high school when we’d do that in winter). That’s, um, a half-step towards the cat’s goal? I wonder if we’ll get to see this kitty around more, since his owner doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. I hope so. He’d be a nice mirror to the masculine Nyamsus. Erm…I guess what I’m trying to say in all of this is that the new cat >>>> the new girl. Sorry, Nagi.

Katt’s kitty-fix was filled by Nyan Koi! episode 45/10
Katt’s kitty-fix is hoping Nyan Koi! episode 5 will be7/10

And it terrifies me that I glanced at a couple of other blog entries on this episode and people are saying it’s the ‘best episode yet’? Urgh… If things continue on this track, I’m gettin’ out of here.

You know, I also felt like I was watching an especially bad version of Ouran High. I’m not really fond of the excessive tomboy that acts like a total man (even “fake hitting on” other girls) and then suddenly in one moment becomes a total girl…okay a freaky clingy, psycho chik girl. What the heck?!

The animation writers should get back to writing about cats which they are actually good at and quit trying their hand on creating warped characters.

I’ll be waiting for more kitties, for sure.

Well, even though this was a disappointing episode: the next episode is much better. I really like the turn of events in that one.
