Ric: Hello everyone, and welcome to the H,S,A debut of Yugioh 5D’s, a show with many cards and many more shenanigans for everyone to enjoy! (No, seriously. This show is batshit insane at times.)
TAAN: Right, right, hey there all. As your two resident duel experts, Ric and I will be covering this series after many, many months of pointless delaying and stalling, right Ric?
Ric: No comment.
Truth be told, I’ve been planning to blog this for a long time, I just…kept forgetting to (You all may have missed the best, yet most ridiculous filler arc in history.) do so.
Better yet, this is a “Jack duels!” episode. So it has to be good, right? RIGHT?!
Yes and no.
Last Episode:
- In the run up to the start of the WRGP, Yusei dueled Andore, a member of rival team, “Team Unicorn” (…Yes, I’m serious.) to a draw, the game timing out before they could finish the duel.
- Yusei, Jack, Crow, Bruno, Aki, Rua and Ruka joined together as “Team 5D’s”. (…Clever.)(like you can actually expect a good name from this series)
- Crow got into an accident, breaking his arm and knocking him out of the competition.
- Aki took over for Crow as Team 5D’s newest D-Wheeler. (They’re either advertising new plant cards, or want more shots of her cleavage. Either way, we all win.)
Personal Opinion:
Okay, first of all the art has gone to crap. Everyone’s eyes seem to be jumping all over their faces, Jack seems to have become half man, half horse and well…just look at this shot.
First, Aki’s eyes appear to be at two different heights (Then again, so are everyone elses’ in this episode.), which is impossible for so, so many reasons. Second…God, there’s just so much weird here.
I appreciate that this is a long-running series and they’ve just released the movie, but this type of dip in the art is just ridiculous. The brilliantly done Dark Signer arc (Which is in my opinion, the best Yugioh we’ve had since Season Zero) showed that they can do better even on a long running arc, so…why now? (Especially with all the money they make with the card game to begin with. =/)
Anyway, other than the art, this episode wasn’t too bad, miles better than all the “Crow duels a weirdo” and…any episode where Rua and Ruka play any sort of part anyway.
Nice to see we’re finally at the WRGP anyway.
Ric’s Rating for Episode 98: 7/10 (It’s saved a lower score because of large amounts of Jack Atlus and the fact that it isn’t more filler.)
Ric’s Anticipation for Episode 99: 8/10
TAAN:
It’s great and all that we’re back to the actual storyline, but this episode was kinda lacking. I mean, the entire plot can be sumarrized thusly:
Peoples: It’s the WRGP! Yay! Let’s Riding Duel!
Team 5D’s: Ohs noes, Unicorn guy has a Unicorn deck! We didn’t plan for that!
Jack: POWER DECKS ARE SUPERIOR TO ALL OTHERS! OH SHI-
It’s got less story than filler arcs, basically. And it was pretty much just a way to introduce the new set of Unicorn cards. It’s as if Industrial Illusions decided to leave all card making to the Yu-Gi-Oh Card Maker or something.
TAAN’s Rating for Episode 98: 6/10 (Bonus points for having Jack)
TAAN’s Anticipation for ep 99: 1/10
And now, Today’s Featured Duel on a Motorbike!
Our duelists for today are Andore, of (pfft) Team Unicorn and Jack Atlus, of Team 5D’s! We couldn’t get a quote from Andore, but when asked about the duel, Jack had this to say!
This would make more sense if Red Demon’s Dragon wasn’t designed to pick defenses apart rather than punishing power plays, but well, yeah…MOVING SWIFTLY ON.
TAAN: This is Jack. All he needs is 3000 ATK. When has he ever made sense anyways?
Ric: I-I honestly don’t know how this costume could possibly get any sillier. (THAT HELMET WILL BE MINE)
Well, at least the bike doesn’t have a–
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUWHYDOESITHAVEAHORN?!
TAAN: See: Gundam Unicorn
Anyway, these guys are sneaky, having tricked Team 5D’s into thinking that Andore uses a Power based deck (Which is why they sent Jack in). Of course, they lied, and Andore is using something completely different.
TAAN: It’s only in the anime that most people only have one deck. *has 5+*
Ric: *Has three*
Also, Andore is a haxy bastard with a superpowered motorbike. (WITH A HORN, DAMNIT) Seriously, nitro from nowhere!
TAAN: At the same time, Jack’s Wheel of Fortune looks horrible now because of the blue add-ons. It was better when it was pure pompous white.
AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE DOES.
Duel Mode, Set, ON!
Andore goes first, summoning the Tuner Monster, Unicorn Familiar, then removes a Spell card in his hand from play to Special Summon Monoceros, both in Defence Mode.
Jack instantly assumes that Andore is going for a first turn Synchro Summon, but no. Andore continues to be sneaky and instead just sets two face downs and ends.
TAAN: Obviously a flag for evil special effects. Normally, one would play cautiously or something here.
Jack is too badass to play conservatively and does this on the first turn. (Vice Dragon+Dark Resonator, doods.)
Jack instantly attacks Unicorn Familiar, only for Andore to reveal his Monster’s (Hilariously situational) effect.
Of course, this means Andore now has a clear field. But wait! Jack assumes that this is a trap, and attempts to stop Red Demon Dragon’s attack.
But WAIT! Unicorn Familiar’s second effect that they just made up stops Jack from stopping his attack! (Yes, we’re into the silly counters game now.)
BUT WAIT! Andore activates his trap card, Different Dimension Barrier – Lost Force, making Jack take the force of Red Demon’s Attack!
Well, this isn’t going to plan.
W-why does everyone have a harem these days?
Anyway, Jack finishes his turn by setting three cards face down.
Andore’s turn starts, and he continues the hax, reviving Unicorn Familiar via its own effect, then reviving Monoceros via the effect of a new monster, Different Dimension Unicorn Knight! (WHAT IS WITH THE GODDAMN UNICORNS, DAMMIT)
TAAN: While I’m all for more D. D. cards, this is ridiculous.
This is followed immediately by more Unicorn Fetish madness when he Synchro Summons this thing.
WHY. WHY ARE WE BOMBARDED WITH UNICORNS?!
Anyway, we now see Charlie’s special effect.
Of course, simple math from Jack states that even with this, Red Demon’s Dragon would still have 2500 Attack points to Thunder Unicorn’s 2200 Attack.
BUT WAIT! Andore reveals that Monoceros’ effect allows him to revive the Tuner Monster used with it in a Synchro Summon, letting him revive Unicorn Familiar, lowering Red Demon’s Dragon’s attack to 2000, which simple math dictactes is lower than 2200! (Yes, this episode points this out, so I will too.)
It’s okay guys, I’m sure Jack can pull out some badass combo…right?
OF COURSE, WE’VE ENTERED THE ANTI-JACK ZONE.
Yeah, on top of all this, his D-Wheel seems to be damaged as well. Maaaaagnificent.
TAAN: Just where the hell did this come from anyways? I thoguht you service all your stuff before starting the race.
Rua and Ruka try to get Jack to go into the Pit for repairs, but of course, Jack, being badass refuses to do this.
TAAN: But Jack, you continue the duel whether you go to the pitstop or not…
This couldn’t possibly bite him in the ass later on. Nooot a chance.
Anyway, back to the duel.
Jack continues to be awesome, summoning Mad Demon, then reviving Dark Resonator with Boosted Resurrection (Which also increases its level by 1.), instantly, he activates his other face down card, Rage Re-Synchro letting him Special Summon Red Demon’s Dragon (With 500 extra Attack points) from the Graveyard by Re-tuning Mad Demon and Dark Resonator.
Oh, Jack. I knew there was a reason that you were the best character in this show. (Aside from Aki<3)
Of course, Andore activates his trap card, Dimension Trap. (Too convoluted to explain without doing this:)
Dimension Trap
Normal Trap Card
Remove from Play one Monster on your side of the field, and one trap card in your Graveyard, the effect of this card becomes the same as the Trap that is removed from play.
Andore chooses to activate the effect of Different Dimension – Lost Force, attempting to take away the last of Jack’s Life Points…
BUT WAIT! Jack activates INSANELY SITUATIONAL TRAP NUMBER 351892 Overpower, which negates the effect of a card that tries to negate the attack of a monster and destroys it!
TAAN: Doesn’t seem that situational, since there are a lot of cards that negate attacks… like Negate Attack.
Andore’s pointy horse hath now been smashed, leaving Andore with 2700 Life points.
I find it funny that he’s only just figuring this out now.
Like, near the end of the duel.
Then again, this team might as well be called “Team Obvious Remarks” anyway.
TAAN: it’s for the slower viewers out there.
So yeah, the rest of the team figure out they’ve been tricked (Finally) and we’re treated to them all becoming Captain Obvious for a little while.
BACK TO THE DUEL!
Andore reveals that Jack’s attack actually helped him (Prepare for ridiculousness, everyone) and that Thunder Unicorn being destroyed allows him to activate his Trap Card, Parallel Select, that allows him to add a card that was Removed from Play to his hand whenever a Synchro Monster is destroyed.
Being an ass, he adds a Speed Spell to his hand, so that he can do this:

And so, Andore really cheats into victory using Speed World – 2’s effect to deal the last bit of damage needed to win.
Of course, the series has decided that it just hates Jack today, so to add insult to injury, we get this:
Hopefully next episode with Aki’s duel won’t be so mean…
-The Lean, Green Tangerine
-The uh… oh just shut up
