Tackling the (Nearly) 100 Episode Backlog: A Quest for Survival

Don’t tell me you think I’m always behind on anime like this.
(Because I know I am)

Miken: I needed a reason to get off my rear and watch all the series that piled up during the tail end of school. My problem is that I pick up way too many series and my sense of “I NEED TO FINISH THIS” kicks in after 3-4 episodes and I become almost completely unable to drop it. It takes something especially horrible (like Winter Sonata) to get me to drop a series well into it. However, this season has been marked with a bunch of series I just didn’t feel like continuing. I suppose I’m finally learning my lesson and not watching series that I don’t outright enjoy to at least some degree. Also — thankfully, not all of these episodes were watched at once. It’s more like catching up bit by bit on each series over a rather long stretch of time [I don't do marathons much anymore].

The story of a girl who loves her music

Dari: Here it is, the show that has been referred to as “K-on at war”, or at least by Samu-Kun, from who’s blog I first heard of this series. It was actually after reading that blog post that I decided to watch this series, and now after watching the 1st episode, I’m glad I did.

Dari: After going through a depressing looking scene, with a tasteful mix of coloured and grey images, set in the past (compared to the main time setting of the anime) we jump what I guess is about 6 to 10 years to the time frame in which the anime will be set (unless the director is evil and has some disaster cause everyone get separated and not see each other again for several year, which I doubt he’ll do)

Dari: We now have the main character introduce her self, and explain that she joined the army because she wanted to learn music… yes, we can tell what her personality is like already… well, looking at the bright side, it has quick character development. So, who is this girl? Konata, Sorami Konata.

Dari: And now we have the opening credits with a very nice song. Now, I’m not the type to pay a lot to the actual opening credits, but one word caught my attention, Kalafina! No wonder I liked the song (yes, I’m a Kalafina fan), and it’s a nice change from the pop band music from K-on. The video for the opening was a montage switching between Konata travelling on the train, and the unit she is off to join having a raffle to figure out who shall take the role of the Maiden of the Festival (which we learn later in the episode was rigged, don‘t know how though). What I’m interested in though is what they’ll o next episode, will they set a standard video clip which they’ll use for all the following eps, and if so, will they keep the current opening song, or will they have background activity for each opening?

and that's where she's been posted

Dari: The plotline of the episode involves Konata arriving in the city of Seize and getting posted to the 1121st Platoon which is in the Time-Telling Fortress. Upon arriving at seize she has a few hours to spare and enjoys the festival. She gets lost and gets involved in a dye fight, getting her uniform dirty, she is then helped by another girl who turns out to a Sergeant Major named Rio (first thing popping into my head after hearing this is the word river… I blame that on my knowledge of random words in random languages) also in the 1121st platoon. After an owl steals Rio’s pendent, Konata takes

chase, and ends up falling into the sea, along with the pendant. While underwater, she sees the bones of the demon that the festival is celebrating the defeat of. When she pulls herself ashore she is all alone, so she plays her horn, which is what the maidens in the legend did when they were prisoners of the demon. The town people hear this, and the Rio, having lost the raffle and playing the part of the head maiden, calls for her trumpet and responds, after which Konata falls asleep. When Konata awakens she is in the time-telling fortress, and it is early

morning, before the sun has risen. She is told to follow Rio (oh, and the Captain, Filicia, has something against ranks, so they aren’t used), up to the tower, where she plays a beautiful melody, before telling Konata to play the Morning Call, which Konata proceeds to massacre… (I’ve never heard it played that bad in my entire life, and I was in the brass section back in my compulsory music class in grade 6) and that’s it for the first episode.

Important things to note that I noticed:
1) the Bell Pendent:
There appears to be a fair bit of similarity between the bell the woman at the start of the episode had, and the bell that Rio had, quite possibly they are the same bell. this means that there could be some connection between that woman and Rio.

2) the remains of the demon)
Well, the legend was true… what, it’s not important you say?! Well, I say it is… Legends aren’t often true, so it gets importence due to that…

3) the tank:
What can I say, It’s a tank, and this is a series about the army, it is going to play a roll in this series, and I’m looking forward to it.

Tank!!! :)

Dari: All in all, I found this Episode surprisingly good, and exceeding my expectations. What I expected was another show like K-on, that involved a group of girls trying to spread the love through music, and not understanding the reality of things, ultimately a pure comedy, but what we have is something that has potential to be more then that, and I’m looking forward to seeing if this goes down a slightly more serious path.

Dari: To compare, the series I was most anticipating, Dance in the Vampire Bund, disappointed  me greatly with a first episode that right off the bat split it’s story line with it’s manga counter part. It’s looking like my gem of the season won’t be the one I looked forward to the most, but this anime which I decided to follow based of a character that looks a bit like Yui from K-on

FYI: the opening song is “Hikari no Senritsu” by Kalafina, and the closing song is “Girls, Be Ambitious” by Tomatsu Haruka

Dari’s surprised liking of the 1st episode: 9/10
Dari’s Anticipation for this Series surpassing the others he’s watching this season: 10/10
